UV Coating for Flyers: Simple Choices
Gloss, matte, or spot UV? Three finishes, each with a different look and feel. Here is how to pick the right one for your event flyers.
What UV Coating Does for Your Flyers
UV coating is a clear protective layer that is applied to your printed flyer and hardened instantly with ultraviolet light. It does two things: it protects your flyer from fingerprints, scratches, and moisture, and it changes how the colors and images look.
For event flyers that get handled multiple times — passed around at meetings, pinned to bulletin boards, stacked on counter displays — coating keeps them looking fresh. An uncoated flyer picks up fingerprints and scuff marks the first time someone handles it. A coated flyer still looks clean after being carried in a bag, taped to a window, or shuffled through a stack.
UV coating also enhances your printed colors. Depending on the finish you choose, coating can make your colors more vivid (gloss), more subdued and modern (matte), or create a striking visual contrast (spot UV). Think of it as the final touch that takes your flyer from "printed" to "finished."
The good news: UV coating is affordable and available on most of our flyer products. Gloss UV is often included in the base price. Matte UV and spot UV are add-on options at checkout. You do not need special file preparation for gloss or matte — just select the finish and we apply it after printing.
Gloss UV: Bright, Vibrant, Event-Ready
Gloss UV gives your flyer a smooth, reflective surface that makes colors appear more saturated and images look sharper. Hold a gloss-coated flyer under any light, and it catches the eye with a clean, polished shine. This is the most popular coating for event flyers because it makes everything look more vibrant.
Gloss UV is the natural choice for flyers with bold imagery — event photos, food images, colorful graphic designs, and high-contrast layouts. The reflective surface amplifies the visual impact of your strongest design elements. A concert flyer with a glossy artist photo. A restaurant flyer with a glossy food image. A grand opening flyer with vibrant brand colors. Gloss UV makes all of these work harder.
From a practical standpoint, gloss UV is also the most durable everyday coating. It handles stacking, handing out, and casual handling without showing wear. The surface resists light scratches and is easy to wipe clean.
On most of our flyer products, gloss UV is included in the base price. If you see a coating option at checkout and gloss UV is available at no extra charge, select it. There is no reason to skip free protection and color enhancement.
Matte UV: Smooth, Modern, Reader-Friendly
Matte UV coating creates a flat, non-reflective surface with a smooth, velvety feel. Colors appear slightly softer than gloss, and the overall look is more sophisticated and understated. There is no glare, no shine — just a clean, modern finish.
Matte UV is the better choice for flyers with a lot of text. Informational flyers, program guides, church bulletins, school newsletters — anything where readability matters more than visual flash. The non-reflective surface eliminates the glare that makes glossy flyers hard to read under overhead lights. Hold a gloss flyer under a fluorescent ceiling light and tilt it — you will see the problem. Matte never has that issue.
Matte UV also hides fingerprints better than gloss. If your flyer has dark backgrounds or large areas of solid color, matte keeps them looking clean after handling. Gloss shows every touch on dark surfaces, which works against you when your flyer is being passed around.
The feel of matte UV is noticeably different from gloss — smoother, less slick, almost soft. Some people describe it as the difference between a polished marble counter (gloss) and a smooth wood table (matte). Both feel good. The choice is aesthetic.
Matte UV typically costs the same as gloss UV. It is a style choice, not a budget choice. Pick whichever finish matches the tone of your event and design.
Spot UV: Targeted Gloss for Maximum Impact
Spot UV is the finishing option that turns heads. Instead of coating the entire flyer, spot UV applies a high-gloss accent to specific areas — your headline, your logo, a key image, or a decorative element. Everything else stays matte. The result is a visual and tactile contrast that makes the coated areas pop.
When someone picks up a flyer with spot UV, two things happen. First, the glossy element catches their eye because it reflects light differently than the surrounding matte surface. Second, when they run their fingers across the flyer, they feel the raised coating — a smooth, dimensional texture that invites them to keep touching it. That sensory engagement is spot UV's superpower.
For event flyers, spot UV works beautifully on the event name, the date, or a featured image. It does not need to be complicated — coating just your event title in spot UV makes it the focal point of the entire piece. The matte background frames the glossy title, and the viewer's eye goes straight to it.
Spot UV does require a mask file (a separate design layer that defines the coated areas) and costs a bit more than standard gloss or matte coating. But for flyers displayed on boards, counters, and table displays where they need to compete for attention, the spot UV upgrade pays for itself in pickup rate.

Choosing the Right Coating for Your Event
Still not sure which coating to pick? Here is a simple decision guide based on your event and flyer type.
Concerts, club events, festivals, parties: Gloss UV. These events are visual and energetic. Glossy finishes match the vibe — vivid colors, sharp images, eye-catching under venue lighting.
Church events, school functions, community meetings: Matte UV. These events are informational and personal. A matte finish keeps text readable, looks professional, and feels approachable. The non-reflective surface works well under the fluorescent lighting common in schools, churches, and community centers.
Grand openings, product launches, brand events: Spot UV. When you need your flyer to make a memorable impression, the tactile dimension of spot UV signals that this event is special. Apply it to your logo or event name for a finishing touch that says "this is worth attending."
Fundraisers, charity events, nonprofit promotions: Your choice depends on budget. Gloss UV is the most cost-effective and is often included. If you have room in the budget for spot UV on a smaller run for VIP distribution, it can help generate interest from potential donors.
Outdoor events where flyers will be posted outside: Gloss UV. The sealed surface provides the best moisture resistance. Matte and spot UV also protect, but gloss sheds water droplets most effectively.
